Experience in Employee Benefits Leadership

Steven Parent is a Principal and Benefit Consultant with Spherient Advisors, serving employers in Richmond, Virginia and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

He brings more than 25 years of experience in the employee benefits industry, advising employers on plan design, cost management, and long-term benefits strategy.

He was inspired to pursue a career in the insurance industry by his father, Walter Parent, who served as Head Administrator of South Hampton Memorial Hospital and founded Healthcare Associates of Virginia. That early exposure to healthcare administration and insurance operations shaped Steven’s interest in helping organizations navigate the complexities of employee benefits.

Steven began his career with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) in 1994, where he held several roles including Data Analyst and Account Sales Executive for major markets. During this time, he developed a strong understanding of health insurance systems, underwriting practices, and large employer benefit programs.

After his tenure with BCBS, Steven transitioned into a sales role with a primary insurance agency before founding his own firm. For more than two decades, he has worked directly with businesses of all sizes, helping them design employee benefits programs that balance cost control, compliance, and employee access to quality healthcare coverage.

Throughout his career, Steven has also contributed industry insight through advisory roles, serving on advisory boards for Sentara Health, United Healthcare, and Delta Dental of Virginia. These roles provide perspective on healthcare systems, insurance carriers, and provider networks that inform his advisory work with employers and benefits committees.

This experience gives Steven a practical understanding of both the carrier and advisory sides of the industry, strengthening his ability to guide employers through complex benefits decisions.
